History
Girl Scouts was born on March 12, 1912 in Savannah, Georgia, when Juliette Gordon Low united 18 girls to form the first Girl Scout troop in America. For almost 100 years, Girl Scouting has been based upon the principles set forth by Ms. Low, that girls develop their character and self-worth from the values we instill, the lessons we teach and the time we invest.
In May of 2008, the five Girl Scout Councils in Nebraska merged to form one, unified council known as Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska. We serve more than 24,000 members in a 92 county region. Realignment allows us to expand our efforts to reach girls in more areas, and to extend resources for programs and activities to girls who have yet to experience Girl Scouting. The organization’s larger geographic span also presents more opportunities for volunteers and girls to work with other girls and adults from diverse backgrounds.
Mission
Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.
Programs
Each Girl Scout program is designed to build self-confidence, creative decision-making skills and teamwork. Through Girl Scouting, girls develop strong values, social conscience and leadership abilities that they will use throughout their lives.
Traditional programs are delivered by trained adult volunteers in troops that meet at schools, churches, community centers or in homes; Outreach programs are provided by trained staff in underserved areas that require additional support; and Juliettes are individually-registered Girl Scouts who may not have time to join a troop but can take advantage of all of the programs and events that are available to Girl Scouts
Girl Scout Camps
Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska opens wide the door for girls to explore the environment at our six camp properties throughout the state. Nature becomes the classroom for girls to learn about trees, animals, recycling, conservation and caring for our planet. Through adult-supervised activities such as the ropes challenge course, camping events and adventure trips, girls are challenged to learn about themselves, to test their physical limits and to work with other girls toward common goals.
Spirit of Nebraska Staff and Leadership
The council consists of almost 90 employees throughout the state of Nebraska who have offices in our eight service centers. The council is guided by a volunteer board of directors comprised of community leaders throughout the state.
Funding
Financial support for the council’s operations and programming come from the sale of products through our product programs, program fees, and revenue from our council stores, United Way contributions across the state, grants and donations from foundations, corporations and individuals who support the mission of Girl Scouts.
