HISTORY: Fremont was settled on August 23, 1856. The City was named for General John C. Fremont, The Pathfinder. Dodge County was formed in 1857, with Fremont being selected as the county seat. First mayor of the city was elected in 1871.

LOCATION: Fremont is located 26 miles west of the Missouri River, on US Highway 30. US Highway 77 and 275 pass through Fremont, north and south. Fremont is 50 miles north of Lincoln, 35 miles northwest of Omaha.

ELEVATION: 1,023 feet above sea level. The area is flat with sandy areas near the Platte River.

POPULATION: In 1990, the U.S. Census figure was 23,680. The Dodge County population was 34,500.

GOVERNING BODY: Mayor- 8 City Council Members- City Administrator.

SCHOOLS: Public Elementary: 10; Public Junior High: 1; Public Senior High: 1; Parochial Catholic: 1 Junior -Senior High; Trinity Lutheran: 2 Elementary; and Midland Lutheran College.

PARKS: 19-totaling over 346 acres. Facilities and picnic equipment, lighted baseball diamonds, tennis courts, fishing area, shelters, outdoor fireplaces, bridle and nature paths, restrooms, and ice skating (winter).

TRANSPORTATION: Bus: Arrow-Black Hills. There is intra-city service by Fremont Transit. Fremont has an airport with planes available for charter service.

STATE LAKES: 3 miles west of Fremont-20 lakes with over 666 acres-unsupervised swimming, fishing, boating, water skiing, scuba diving, hiking, and excellent camping area ($7.00 without electricity and $10.00 with electricity per night). A Nebraska State Park permit is required on all vehicles entering the State Lakes. Fees are Resident/ Non Resident Annual-$14. Resident/Non Resident Daily-$2.50. There may be a .25 issuing fee on all permits. The Platte River, which borders the city to the south, provides cat fishing.
